So the last time I was in LA for work the Los Angeles Lakers were playing the Oklahoma Thunder & it would have just been WRONG of me not to go. I’ve loved the Lakers since I played basketball in High School and to get the chance to see them play LIVE was totally amaze balls so I was pretty stoked to find someone to go with me (shouts to Sheralyn for keeping my excited self company). She even accompanied me shopping to find a ‘Kobe’ bball singlet – yup thats me wearing it in the pic above holding our LA Lakers tickets right outside the Staple Centre entrance woop woop! How bout we picked THE best game to go to as well – Kobe was back after quite a long absence and it was the game that Metta World Peace decided to get violent and ended up with a 7 game suspension for elbowing James Harden in the face – Wowzers! Calm Down Metta! THEN the game went into DOUBLE overtime which had both Sheralyn and I out of our seats until the Lakers won 114 – 106 YUSS!
The Staple Centre was PACKED but we had pretty good seats so was able to get some good shots. Atmosphere was totally awesome and there was never a dull moment. When there was a timeout we were entertained by the Laker girls and at each quarter time break we’d watch as the cameras would pick out couples or groups of people to jump up and dance or kiss – all new & quite different to us NZ girls. Last time I went to a league game here in NZ the half time entertainment was a group of people having a race in their undies – awesome lol!
I’d also like to give major props to John Gotty of the Smoking Section who – even though I’m sure his gmail inbox is out of control every day – always replies to my lost girl questions! Gotty where can I get good Lakers tickets? He always comes through though! He referred me to a site called StubHub.com If you’re ever in the US and want to take in any kind of major sporting event or game – check out StubHub – great prices AND they take International credit cards. I had tried the official Lakers site before I had asked Gotty about tickets and nope they don’t accept international credit cards – no bueno!
So while I made sure I went to watch a basketball game when I was in Los Angeles – we often get asked what games are on, and again, where you can get tickets when in the US, so here’s a run down on the different sporting seasons there and as mentioned before – I recommend StubHub.com if you’re wanting to pre-purchase tickets from NZ or anywhere outside of the States.
Baseball Season: April – October ( includes post season/World Series)
Football Season: Aug – Jan ( Super Bowl in Feb)
Basketball Season: Dec – Apr ( then playoffs)
Hockey Season: Dec – Apr ( then playoffs)
There are of course pre-season games that are on outside of these dates as well but if you’re travelling to the US for the first time I’d definitely recommend taking in some kind of a US sporting event or game. It’s a cultural experience in itself!
If you’re in Los Angeles & want to see a football game you’ll need to travel to San Diego or San Francisco/Oakland for one of their home games though as LA don’t actually have a team. Shouts to Kelly Guinn (Sales Manager at the Castle Inn & Suites Anaheim) for the sporting dates & info above.

Did I mention it was Jack Nicholsons birthday? Yeah, we sang Happy Birthday to him too – can you spot some of the other famous people sitting near or round him? I wasn’t meant to be using my zoom lenses on the camera but I figured that if the security guys didn’t take them off me at the beginning of the game they can’t have been that serious about it lol
