i DO like a good fight for a good cause and thats exactly what LTD Entertainment put on, on Friday night – well actually there were 10 great fights & a celebrity blindfold match – all for charity with proceeds going to the Ronald Mcdonald House while representing their respective rugby league clubs.
20 rugby league players from the Fox Memorial Shield (including 4 women rugby league players) put all the talk on the league field into action in the boxing ring and brrrrroooooo! They came out with the big hits alright! I have to say that some professional heavy weight matches bore me because it’s a lot of jab, jab, walk around the ring, jab, jab, duck, jab, jab walk around the ring some more, I guess because they have to try and last 12 rounds if they don’t get a knock out in there. But THESE fights were short and sweet – 3 x 3 minute rounds where the fighters came out with the full on hits and went hard every round! I was like Good lawwwwd remind me not to try pick a fight with a girl who plays rugby league! lol! There were a couple of knock downs but no actual knock outs though. Mad respect to all the fighters who got up there in the ring!
Clubs represented included Richmond, Howick, Marist, Point Chev, Papakura, Glenora, Mangere East and Manurewa.
I gotta hand it to Allan Tonkin and the LTD Entertainment crew – they really put on an awesome night from the security guys, caterers, boxing officials, refs, MC (Jandals ) right through to the lighting, sound system, half time entertainment of Charlie Pomee & Konrad Hurrell, celebrity blindfold match (Nate & Manu Vatuvei) and all the rugby league teams supporting their fighters and of course the fighters themselves.
Shouts to Niu FM breakfast host Jandals Tuipea who did a mean job hyping the crowd up introducing the fighters for each round and also announcing the winners. Was cool to catch up with him and Nate who used to do Niu FMs Drive show back in the Brown Street days! It was like a reunion! Shout out The Hills and Joey *cough* who didn’t quite make it *cough* lol!
Charlie Pome’e (lead singer of Three Houses Down) & NZ Warriors Konrad Hurrell provided half time entertainment and at one point had the whole stadium singing Fiji’s “Sweet Darling” which cracked me up. I was thinking ‘only at a Poly event’ lol!
Nate & Manu’s celebrity blindfold match though! Tooooo funny! I had to apologise to Nate later because I didn’t get many shots of his fight cos I was too busy laughing lol! Props to him for being the only one to climb up on the ropes (WWE Rock Styles) ok yeah, Nates entrance wasn’t quite as dramatic as my babes but bonus points for use of the ropes lol!

All in all it was a great night for a great cause. Much respect to Allan and the team who did an awesome job bringing everything together and he’s also been able to confirm a Union vs League Fight Night next year on the 28th of November. Put it in your calendar kids – if you missed out this year you don’t want to miss out again!
